The skies may be blue, but it’s been blowing a gale each afternoon, and it’s bitterly cold. When I got up at 7.00, the last two mornings, it was around 12C inside the boat. Good thing we have very warm duvets for the night and we can warm the boat up with the heating system on, during the day. The bonus of the cold weather is that there are no insects to bother us.

We cooked dinner onboard for the first time this trip; local sea bass. Although it’s farmed, it was delicious. The wild asparagus frittata, that we cooked for lunch was very tasty too, with an even milder flavour than the asparagus we get in the UK.

The boat prep continues at a nice steady pace. Yesterday, we managed to blow the electrics, having run the generator, to check that was working properly and then, after powering that down and plugging back into the electricity supply, we lost all power. Steve found the trip switch and we were back up and running again, a great relief, as we really need the heating at the moment. After a trip to the supermarket, we now have more comprehensive food supplies.

This morning, first thing, our sails arrived and we got the main sail on, during the morning lull of the wind. Mid morning the riggers arrived to do the rig check. I am delighted that they have tightened the rig. Meantime we went through our first aid cupboard and discovered that the batteries in the defibrillator had have gone flat, despite being dated until 2027. I guess that’s because they’ve been in extreme cold over the winter. After visiting three shops, I found that the phone shop stocks the required batteries, but, as we need ten, they will have to be ordered. They are rather expensive too, at five euros each, but that’s a small price, should we ever need to use it. It’s one of the expensive pieces of equipment that you hope you will never have to use.

Our super posh new tender has been delivered. Excited to use it!
