13 April 2023 - Kremik and Primosten

The wind had whipped up in the night, as predicted, so by the time we got up, the gale was in full force. This a ‘Jugo’ (pronounced Hoogo), a strong wind from the southeast. This is a time, when, confined to being in port, that you have to catch up on admin and cleaning. Those things out of the way, we walked the coastal path round to the holiday town of Primosten. It was about 6.5 kilometres and took us the best part of an hour and a half. There were times when we were being blown down wind and times when we battling into the wind.

Primosten is a very pretty little place, the old town having narrow cobbled streets lined with stone houses. The original village was built on an island and surrounded by walls to protect the villagers from the Turks. Today the island is linked to the mainland by a causeway, the walls have been mostly demolished and modern development fringes the bay. The church spire at the top of the hill stands proudly above the other buildings. The whole place was spotlessly clean and the shutters beautifully painted. Only a couple of cafes were open; everything else was closed. It was bizarrely quite, considering it was Thursday afternoon. Even the diggers and lorries, in an area on the coastal path approaching the town, were parked and inactive. It looks as though an extension to the promenade is being built. The seafront around the harbour has been very tastefully done, with white stone walkways and delightful sculptures.

The cafe we choose to get a coffee was full of locals, most chain smoking in the outer conservatory and inside. We enjoyed our coffee and dallied as long as we could stand, before setting off again. You have to admire such disregard to the rules in a village with a very small population. They do their own thing. The price of the coffee confirmed my suspicions that there are two economies here; one for the locals and one for the tourists. I’ll bet that two coffees won’t cost 3.19 euros in a months time.

Wild flowers growing by the path

On returning to the boat, we had done well over 20,000 steps, so earned a tasty fish stew for supper.

  1. Hi Tricia & Steve, It must be magic for you both having Chris occasionally join you on your adventures (magic for him also). Looking forward to following your trip as the adventure unfolds. I am currently laying in a hospital bed having just had a total right knee replacement surgery two days ago. This follows wrist joint replacement surgery 2.5 months ago. I am very much relying on you guys to provide me with requisite entertainment during my rehab! Safe and happy sailing. Brad
