12 May 2023 - Otok Cvijeca

This is country of vast contrasts.  We started the day with strong winds blowing through the marina, accompanied by heavy rain and for a short period, hailstones.  However, about 2 hours later, all was peace and quiet, the sky had patches of blue and the deck was starting to dry. The range of conditions were just like a good summer’s day in England.

We knew that we only had a short distance to go today. During our stay here, we expect to be with the Bay of Kotor, so everything is close. We therefore had a leisurely start and, once the rain had stopped, went to check out and buy more food.  The ladies in the Marina Reception have become our friends, and we had a long chat with them. They told us that there was a sailing rally coming in the next few days, at the end of a race from Bari.  The owner of a boat based in the marina is very hopeful of winning again.  At the end of our chat, we were presented with baseball caps with the marina’s name. These always come in handy as they inevitably get blown off your head and over the side at some stage during the year.

After lunch we slipped out of the marina and motored towards our next stop. This was the other big contrast of the day.  From the “posh-ville” Portonovi, we are now staying at what is little more than a jetty, with about 16 other boats, close to the airport.  We have access to water and electricity, but there are no shops or restaurants close by.  The marina is full of sailing boats and is inhabited by proper sailors, with many doing maintenance on their boats, a far cry from Portonovi.

We passed this island with a church or potentially a monastery

The island where we are also has a church and this shrine being built at a quay

We have no idea what this says!
