31 May 2023 - Luka Jurjeva, Lastovo

We were up with the lark this morning, to reset the reefing line for the main, while there was no wind. We have a furler boom, and the sail gets rolled up inside the boom, when it is down. In previous years the reefing line has been a continuous loop, which meant that the two ends of the rope were spliced together. Each year a different person had done the splice, because we were in a new place, and each year the splice either jammed or broke. Last autumn, we decided to try using a very long discontinuous line instead of the loop, and since then, we have had no problems with it. However the line slowly shifts in one direction, eventually making one end too short. So this morning we hoisted the sail, dropped it on the deck, reset the reefing line, re hoisted the sail and rolled it back in the furler boom. This all took just under  an hour, and we had just finished when some breeze started to fill in, so perfect timing.

The rest of the day was spent very quietly, as Steve wasn’t feeling too well with a tummy upset. We have no idea what has set it off, as we both ate the same things yesterday. These minor complaints are so often a mystery.

I busied myself catching up with sending messages and admin, then with jobs that you only get to when there is really nothing else. The cockpit cushions are now looking beautifully clean and the chart plotter has some of the routes filed in a more logical order.

By mid morning all the other boats that had been moored in the bay last night, had gone and we had the place to ourselves, other than a fishing boat, which replaced the two small cruise boats, at the quay in the entrance. It is so peaceful when there is only the sound of birdsong and gentle rippling of the water on the hull. The sky was cloudy and dull around lunchtime but the forecast thunder storms missed us. By late afternoon, the sea and sky were, once again, beautiful shades of blue.
