1st October 2023 - Vathy, Island of Meganisi

It’s the first of October and we are still in T-shirts and shorts right into the evening. The temperature is in the upper 20’s during the day and only drops to 20C at night. The sky is blue.



There’s a pleasant walk from Aberlaki Bay, by way of the road and a “goat track” to the village of Vathy. It’s a delightful place and we can well understand that quite a few Brits and other nationalities have formed a community, along with the locals. The village has a balance between coffee shops, restaurants, small supermarkets, a bakery and tourist shops to make it very attractive. One can easily while away the morning walking around the seafront and enjoying a coffee.

In the afternoon it’s almost a necessity to go for a swim to cool down after the heat of the afternoon. Today a few few more boats were in the bay than yesterday, mainly due to the arrival of those on their charter week. The one or two local boats with families, out to enjoy Sunday on the water, left quite early.


We had been invited to a birthday party in the evening, so a great excuse to get a little more glammed up. I had to put shorts on under my dress, while we crossed to the land in the tender, then shimmy out of them for the party. It was Tom’s 88th birthday. We were a party of about fifteen, sitting outside in the town square at one of the favourite restaurants of the folks who know this place well. The food was superb. In the evening we were invited to join the birthday celebration and meet several of Tom and Sherida’s friends, who all absolutely love this island of Meganisi. One couple, who have sailed the waters of the Mediterranean for years had decided to go no further and bought a house on the cliff of Aberlaki Bay, where they spend five months of the year.


A joyous evening was had by all.

This is expected to be our last day in Croatia, we plan to head to Italy tomorrow.  We woke to a completely tranquil scene, with barely a ripple on the water. We headed ashore in the tender, and walked into Ubli, where there is a supermarket.   It is more than 4 km in each direction, but we needed to buy enough bread to last us today and tomorrow.    The road is mostly quiet, but there are no footpaths, and when the cars come, they are not expecting to encounter pedestrians, so it is a bit daunting at times. The views make it all worthwhile, and we were rewarded at the inland end by finding a larger and better stocked supermarket than we had expected.    The return was uneventful and we enjoyed our well deserved lunch when we arrived back on board. We have read that the chimneys on the island are unique, and are determined by your family and status.  We haven’t seen enough to have good comparisons, but we did see one that was quite noticeable...

26 May 2023 - - Saplunara, Mljet

Getting up in the morning to greet the new day, with a beautiful bay as your back garden, can’t be beaten. The sky was pearl grey, but no matter, it’s not raining. Today included two trips ashore, the morning one to walk along the coastal path, to Blace Cove. What a gorgeous beach! It’s a protected bay and boasts being the best preserved bay of coastal sands in Croatia. Rare plants and fungi grow here, along with marine algae and sea grass meadows in the water. It’s a wide bay with shallow water and lots of rocks so even quite small boats couldn’t get in, even if they were allowed, which they are not. It is surrounded by the largest stone pine forest in Croatia and is completely peaceful and tranquil. Blace Cove Just as well we didn't step on this fella as we returned Saplunara is a tiny village, with a high number of rental apartments for the size of the place. 24 - 27 March 2023 - Amersham / Zagreb / Biograd

Our Spring / Summer adventures started when the alarm went off at 04:20 on 24th March. The flight to Zagreb was completely full, the passengers including Welsh football supporters going to watch their team play Croatia in the Euro qualifiers, and a Para-Olympic Boccia team going to play-offs for next year’s Olympics. We had a superb 22 hours with our friends Stevo and Jasna in Zagreb, during which we managed to walk around the centre of the city. There are lots of late 19th century buildings, making it very attractive, along with the outside cafes and restaurants of European café society. The centre being largely pedestrianised and serviced by trams just adds to it’s appeal.
