7 October 2023 - Spartochori, Meganisi

The village of Spartochori perches on the cliff top, so it is a walk up several sets of steps from the harbour, through cypress and pine trees. It’s a delightful sleepy Greek island village, with white washed houses, a warren of alleys and lanes, most too small for cars. The gardens were full of vegetables, some of giant proportions.

It is an excellent place to while away an hour over a coffee, enjoying the spectacular view over to Lefkas in one direction and right across to the mainland on the east, with its majestic mountains.

Then, for us, was the delight of seeking out the butcher’s shop in a very unassuming residence. The people are so kind, welcoming and helpful. What to buy? We decided to ask for some steak. Out of the walk in fridge came a fabulous piece and the young man sawed a thick slice for us. It was such a reason price; way cheaper than we would pay for a similar steak at home.

Armed with this, vegetables and eggs, we made our way back down the steps.

As this was a Saturday in October, the beach was only occupied by locals. The swimming is superb, as the clear water is still very warm, especially in the shallows close to the shore.

In the afternoon boats were arriving and Babis was hastening the later arrivals to berth quickly because “a big wind is coming”. Neither we, nor our neighbours could see anything forecasting a big wind, but sure enough, within half an hour of his barking out his concern a big wind did come in and we were all bouncing somewhat, as the harbour is open to a northerly.

Babis’s restaurant is a little more expensive than others we have been to nearby, but the price was fair, given that it also includes the berth, electricity and water. We counted fourteen staff. It was busier today than yesterday because of the arrival of some charter boats, at the beginning of their week. The food was excellent. It’s just a little disconcerting that you only find out the cost when presented with the bill. The EU regulations about displaying your menu and prices are not adhered to here. Just as well it’s all very reasonable. You have to admire the non conformist attitude.
