9 April 2023 - Easter Sunday - Klement

We spent a very peaceful night and woke to glorious sunshine again. I don’t know what the temperature was inside the boat, but it was cold enough for condensation, so the diesel heater went on. This the first time we have used this since we were in northern Germany.

The forecast had been for very little wind, but we did manage to sail for about an hour, towards Hvar. This is a town which attracts huge numbers of visitors in the summer, which, I’m sure has it’s fun, but we are delighted to be coming when it’s quiet. We were told by the locals, that the restaurants, bars and cafes had opened five days ago.

We headed into the marina on the island of Klement, opposite Hvar town. From the entrance, as we approached, around 1.00pm, the place looked deserted, but getting nearer, a marinaro appeared. Being the only boat, we could moor along side the pontoon, rather than using the lazy lines. The staff were clocking off at 2.00, as it’s Easter Sunday. While we having lunch, four more boats arrived, but that was the total for the night.

Half a dozen peacocks roam the marina area

We booked a water taxi to take us to Hvar town and, as he arrived to pick us up, he was also delivering Easter cake to the remaining marinaro on duty.

The taxi driver was a lovely guy, who loves living here, even though, typical of a small town, everyone knows everything. He told us a highlight of the year is a 20 kilometre procession, which sets off from one of the churches in the town at 10.00pm on Maundy Thursday and continues via various other churches on the island until 06.00am the following morning. There is then another procession through the town on Easter Saturday.

We spent a superb afternoon walking around the town and climbing the steep hill up to the fortress. The small hamlet started to be developed in 1925, by a local guy, who was interested in developing tourism here. He built a park, with herbs and other fragrant plants, he organised a water supply from local springs, he put in street lighting, and developed the harbour. It has grown a lot, since we were last here about 15 years ago, but the centre still retains it’s charm.

We enjoyed a meal of tradition fish dishes and local wine, then returned to the marina just as the sun was setting, allowing us to enjoy an uninterrupted view of a beautiful sunset.
