3 May 2023 - Dubrovnik

It was still grey, overcast and misty in the morning, and not much wind, but it was time to move on. It is 40 miles to Cavtat, which is supposed to be a summer port of entry and exit for Croatia. We had heard rumours among our fellow sailors that the office was closed, then that it was open until 12.00, but hadn’t be able to find any official information that confirmed any of this, so we decided to give it a try.

We motored and sailed, thankfully missing the heavy rain that we could see over the mountains. Approaching the small bay of Cavtat, the wind had whipped up and it was quite tricky negotiating the narrow channel in, while we were being blown sideways. The pretty bay itself was quite sheltered. The quay, where the customs dock is, is being dug up and there was clearly no quay to dock at. This meant going back about nine miles to Gruz, which has the customs dock in Dubrovnik. Thankfully, it is all still very quiet in sailing boat numbers, so we got a place in the marina with no problem, arriving about 6.30 in the evening.

We passed the beautiful old city of Dubrovnik twice.

It had been quite a full on day, and I was completely spent. Despite it being a busy harbour, with large cruise ships and day tripper boats buzzing about, it all went quite into the night.
