8 May 2023 - Portonovi
We have really enjoyed being in Herceg Novi and we may well return, but seeing another part of the Montenegro coast beckons. We had found a coffee shop in the old town frequented by lots of the locals, which we always regard as a sign of the coffee being good. Groups of ladies and or older men are often engaged in lively conversation. People watching is great entertainment. The outdoor market here is small, with a limited selection of produce, but we did find enough to top us up, have a coffee and then depart the harbour.
We decided on going to Portonovi, a very new marina in the bay. They want to compete with Porto Montenegro, the other major marina nearby. It was only a short hop of less than 4 miles across. On arrival, first of all, we filled up with fuel. The man who greeted us was just as happy and welcoming as everyone else here. He also gave us coffee, while we were fuelling; that’s a first anywhere. Next the marinaros were ready in their tender to lead us to our berth. They were the most professional marinaros that we have come across for sometime. It’s always a little worrying when marina staff do not respond on the VHF, especially when they have told you to call them as you approach the port. Here they responded very quickly.
Portonovi is a huge development of hotels, apartments, shops and restaurants, set around the marina. It is very nicely finished and looks attractive. At the moment, though, a lot of the apartments are empty and so it appears to lack a bit of soul. There are a few super yachts moored, but we’ve seen the seriously big ones heading towards Porto Montenegro. Nevertheless, we are here to sit out grotty weather for a few days. There is not high wind in the forecast, but rather thundery rain.
